- MSIT Celebrates Information Security Month in July

The Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Lee Jong Ho, hereinafter referred to as ‘MSIT’), in collaboration with the Korea Information Security Industry Association (President Cho Young-chul, hereafter ‘KISIA’) and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (President Lee Sang-jung, hereafter ‘KISA’), will celebrate Information Security Month throughout July under the theme “Strengthening Global Cybersecurity to Uphold Everyone’s Trust!”

Information Security Month is held annually in July to enhance public security awareness and promote a culture of information protection in response to increasing cyber threats. The month-long event includes various activities such as ceremonies, awards for distinguished contributors to information security, public awareness campaigns, and more.

This year, to make information security more accessible to the public, a variety of online and offline events and campaigns will be held, encouraging public participation. Additionally, to enhance global cooperation in cybersecurity, international events will be organized to elevate Korea’s standing in the global community.

Key Initiatives for This Year:

1. Security Day Events: Ceremony, International Conference, and Product Exhibitions:

The 13th Information Security Day will be celebrated with a ceremony, international information security conference, and product exhibition. These events will be held on July 10 at the Swiss Grand Hotel in Seoul, with participation from approximately 1,000 representatives from government agencies, academia, and industry.

Before the ceremony, keynote speeches will be delivered by prominent figures, including the Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO)* of Google Cloud, discussing topics such as “Global Cybersecurity Cooperation” and “Trends in Information Security Technologies.”

*CISO (Chief Information Security Officer): The executive responsible for ensuring that all information assets and technologies are adequately protected.

The international information security conference will feature speakers from private companies (i.e. CISOs) and government agencies, covering topics such as future strategies for information security and global threat response strategies. Additionally, government policy announcements will be made.

The product exhibition will feature 19 companies and organizations, including leading firms like SOFTCAMP, known for cloud security, and SecuLetter, recognized for advanced malware detection technologies. Attendees can experience cutting-edge information security products and technologies at the exhibition booths.

2. Global Events in Conjunction with Information Security Day: OECD Global Forum on Digital Security for Prosperity and CAMP Annual Meeting:

Aligned with this year’s theme, “Strengthening Global Cybersecurity to Uphold Everyone’s Trust!”, the event will offer numerous opportunities for global communication and cooperation in cybersecurity.

The 5th OECD Global Forum on Digital Security for Prosperity will be hosted in Korea for the first time, inviting government agencies, industry leaders, academic experts, researchers, and global companies from 38 member countries. Discussions will cover recent cybersecurity issues, including “Opportunities and Challenges of Open-Source Software,” “Collaboration for Safer and More Resilient Supply Chains,” and “Regulatory Approaches to Digital Security.”

The forum will allow member countries to share best practices and challenges, influencing future policy-making. Notably, Korean experts will participate as speakers, introducing the nation’s digital security laws, policies, and technologies.

The Cybersecurity Alliance for Mutual Progress (CAMP)* annual meeting will be held concurrently from July 9-11 at the Swiss Grand Hotel in Seoul. This event, attended by cybersecurity officials from 15 countries, will feature sessions on “AI-Based Cyber Resilience: Strengthening Defense Against Ransomware Threats,” including annual meetings, high-level bilateral meetings, capacity-building seminars, and corporate networking events. It aims to promote Korea’s advanced cybersecurity technologies and facilitate international business opportunities for domestic companies.

*CAMP (Cybersecurity Alliance for Mutual Progress): A global cybersecurity cooperation network established in 2016, consisting of 71 institutions from 51 countries, focused on sharing information and enhancing cybersecurity capabilities.

3. Public Engagement Events in July: Activities for Nationwide Participation

Throughout July, various public engagement events will be held to raise awareness of information security, allowing people to directly experience its importance and integrate security practices into their daily lives.

In the first week of July, a QR code scanning event will be held to raise awareness about the emerging cybercrime of QR code phishing (Qshing). In the second week, a nationwide information security quiz will take place.

The third week will feature an event at the Hangang Swimming Pool, where participants can receive promotional items related to information security practices and participate in quizzes to enhance their understanding of information security. The final week will focus on raising awareness of AI-based hacking attacks through a “Spot the AI-Generated Video” event.

Detailed information on each event can be found on KISA’s Instagram account @kisa118_.

Ryu Je-myung, Deputy Minister of MSIT’s Network Policy Bureau, emphasized the need for collective efforts from the public, government, and businesses to combat evolving cyber threats. He expressed hope that the diverse events during Information Security Month will reinforce the importance of information security and enhance Korea’s global leadership in cybersecurity.
