This report presents the results of an analysis of the Swedish life science business sector conducted by the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems (Vinnova) on behalf of the Swedish Government. The objective is to establish a long-term, continuous statistical framework for identifying and monitoring life science companies over time, thereby supporting the implementation of A National Strategy for Life Science and enhancing understanding of the sector’s development.

In 2023, the Swedish life science sector comprised 3,879 companies employing approximately 53,000 people, with a total net turnover of SEK 508 billion and goods exports amounting to SEK 195.6 billion. The sector accounted for 2.1 percent of Sweden’s GDP and was characterised by a highly educated workforce, a significant share of doctoral-level expertise, and a broadly balanced gender distribution, highlighting the sector’s strong human capital base.
